Generational expectations are shifting. Workforce supply has not kept pace with demand. The conditions keep changing, and the playbook keeps expiring.
Surfing offers a more honest metaphor. You do not control the wave. You read it, position yourself, and commit. The leaders who wipe out are not the ones who lacked skill – they are the ones who waited too long, leaned the wrong way, or tried to muscle through forces that required finesse instead of force.
Three lessons transfer directly to leadership. First, timing matters more than strength. The best surfers do not paddle harder – they read the set and move early. Leaders who act before a problem becomes a crisis consistently outperform those who react after the damage is visible. Second, balance is not a fixed position – it is constant adjustment. Leaders who appear steady are not rigid; they are making micro-corrections continuously. Third, respect for the ocean means knowing what you cannot control. The leaders who earn the most trust are not the ones projecting certainty – they are the ones who are honest about uncertainty and stay present anyway.
